Privacy Policy
VideoNote Pro ("VideoNote Pro," "we," "us," or "the extension") is a browser extension that helps users capture screenshots, timestamps, short recordings, transcripts, and AI-assisted notes while watching online videos. This Privacy Policy explains what information the extension processes, why it is processed, where it is stored, and the choices available to users.
1. Summary
- We do not sell personal information.
- We do not use advertising, behavioral tracking, or third-party analytics in the current release.
- The current release does not require a VideoNote Pro account.
- User-provided AI API keys are stored locally and are not synchronized through Chrome Sync by VideoNote Pro.
- Video content is sent to an AI provider only when the user activates an AI or transcription feature.
2. Information Processed by the Extension
Video and webpage information
- The URL and title of the current webpage or video
- Video playback time, duration, and playback state
- Available subtitles or caption text
- Frames captured by the user, including selected screen regions
- Audio or video data captured after the user starts a recording or AI transcription feature
Notes and user-created content
- Notes, timestamps, custom titles, Markdown content, and temporary note-session data
- Screenshots and recordings intentionally created by the user
- The tail of an existing note when needed to reduce repetition in an AI-generated continuation
Settings and credentials
- Interface language, theme, note format, export preferences, selected AI provider, model names, and provider endpoint settings
- AI and transcription API keys entered by the user
VideoNote Pro does not collect this information for advertising, profiling, or sale.
3. Local Storage and Chrome Sync
- AI and transcription API keys are stored in
chrome.storage.local. They remain in the local browser profile and are not intentionally placed in Chrome Sync. - Temporary note-session metadata and locally applicable state may also be stored locally.
- Non-secret preferences may be stored in
chrome.storage.sync. Chrome may synchronize these preferences through the user's signed-in browser account according to Chrome's own terms and privacy practices.
Local extension data remains until the user changes or clears it, clears the browser profile, or uninstalls the extension, subject to browser behavior.
4. Obsidian and Local File Access
VideoNote Pro can export Markdown notes and related media to a folder selected by the user, including an Obsidian vault. The extension accesses a folder only after the user selects it through the browser's picker. Exported notes, screenshots, and recordings remain under the user's control on the user's device and are not uploaded to the developer.
5. AI and Transcription Services
AI features are optional and operate only after the user activates them. The current release uses a bring-your-own-key model. Depending on the provider selected by the user, VideoNote Pro may send information directly to DeepSeek, Alibaba Cloud Model Studio / DashScope (Qwen), Zhipu AI, Google Gemini, OpenAI, or a custom HTTPS-compatible AI endpoint configured by the user.
The information sent may include the video title, current timestamp, relevant subtitle or transcript text, existing note context, a user-captured frame, or captured audio. The user's API key is sent to the selected provider only as required to authenticate that request.
The developer does not receive or store the content of direct provider requests. Each provider processes information according to its own terms and privacy policy. Users should review their selected provider's policies before enabling AI features.
6. Requests to Video Websites
To identify the active video and support timestamp, caption, screenshot, and recording features, VideoNote Pro may read information from the current webpage and request video, caption, or media resources made available by that website. These requests are used only to provide the feature requested by the user. VideoNote Pro does not create a browsing-history profile or use website activity for advertising.
7. Browser Permissions
- activeTab: Temporarily grants access to the current tab only after the user invokes VideoNote Pro, allowing the extension to work on other compatible video websites without permanent access to every site.
- scripting: Runs extension-packaged functions in authorized video pages to detect the active video, obtain playback information, and support capture and note-taking actions.
- sidePanel: Displays the VideoNote Pro workspace beside the current video.
- storage: Saves local credentials, preferences, and temporary note-session information.
- tabCapture: Captures audio or media from the selected tab after the user starts recording or AI transcription.
- Required host access: Is limited to YouTube, Bilibili, their caption or media hosts, and the supported AI service endpoints needed for core features.
- Optional host access: May be requested for a specifically supported additional video site only after the user chooses to enable that site.
8. Data Sharing
VideoNote Pro does not sell, rent, or trade user information. Information is disclosed only to the AI or transcription provider selected by the user as necessary to perform the requested feature; to the current video website when retrieving resources made available by that website; when required by applicable law; or when necessary to protect users, the extension, or others.
9. Data Retention and Deletion
The developer does not maintain a server-side database of user notes, captures, recordings, API keys, or browsing history in the current release. Users can remove API keys or reset settings, clear extension data through Chrome, delete exported files, or uninstall the extension. Information sent to a selected provider is retained according to that provider's policies and the user's provider-account settings.
10. Data Security
VideoNote Pro limits secret storage to the local browser profile and requires HTTPS for configurable AI endpoints. However, no method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure. Users are responsible for protecting their browser profile, device, API keys, and third-party provider accounts.
11. Children's Privacy
VideoNote Pro is a general-purpose productivity tool and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect children's personal information. Users must comply with the age requirements of Chrome and any AI provider they choose to use.
12. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when the extension's features, data practices, or legal obligations change. The revised policy will be posted at the same public URL with an updated "Last updated" date.
